The evacuees
As they stepped out of the station into the countryside, the first thing that John and Lucy noticed was that the people were all dressed in very queer shirts and dresses. The clothing looked cheap, since they were from the city, and a bit old. But the biggest shock of all was the ginormous well that stood proudly in the centre square of that part of the countryside.” What in the world!”exclaimed Lucy with her jaw wide open and John staring forwards in disbelief. People were lining up to get a bucket of water from the well. It was at that moment that the pair of them came to the perturbing realisation; this place was nothing like home.
“ What are we gonna eat when we get to wherever we’re going?”asked John who had been hungry for eight hours on the train because he forgot to pack some food for himself.” Dunno,” replied Lucy. After walking about half a mile from the centre square, they managed to reach the place. To them it looked extraordinarily odd. The field behind the house stretched for at least fifty acres and the cottage was so bijou. Once the elderly couple welcomed the pair of children into the cottage, John and Lucy inquisitively peered in every nook and cranny of the house. It was spectacular. There was a cosy little bedroom, a perfect kitchen and an amazing living room. All of the primitive abode was built of red brick and had antique furniture.
The children always loved helping around the cosy cottage and were never playing tricks or being annoying. They were obedient children who were super kind and caring. The couple felt they needed kids because age would catch up fast and they struggled doing household chores. John and Lucy would always help to maintain the home and in their free time would boisterously play out in the field. The family would always cook them the best food even if they were exhausted after a long day. John and Lucy would help gather the ingredients such as wheat, barley or milk from the farm cows. This was tough at the start but eventually they became very resilient. The pair of them would also go to school in which Lucy and John used to compete with each other.
Once the children found out about the war ending, they were swimming in a pool of joy and elation.” Yippee!”the pair of them cried. The children decided to see how long they had been in the countryside. They were astounded to find out that it had been roughly six years. John was now sixteen years old and his younger sister Mary was fourteen years old. John happily shouted,” Now we can go home Mary! I am so excited to see Mum and Dad!”
Mary blithely cried,” Yes! I can’t wait to see Mum and Dad!” Of course, it was still a bittersweet moment as they were going to be saying goodbye to the old couple.
After a few days, they arrived at the station and took one last look at the town that had nurtured and raised them for years. It was teary moment and the couple gave them a small locket with a picture of all four of them. This would be John’s and Mary’s memento about this quaint little home. After a few hours, John and Mary finally got to meet their parents again. They tightly embraced each other. After this moment, they all lived happily remembering their experience of war.
